Therapeutic Approach

I would like to preface my beliefs on my therapeutic approach by first saying that I view the different schools of therapeutic approaches as I do with musical genres. I don’t see one as being superior over the other, rather I see it as a matter of taste and preference that resonates with individuals based on their personality, past experiences, culture belonging, and identity. As such, I try to learn from as many areas as I can, both from inside and outside the therapy world.

For those who are interested in the therapy jargon, my approach and background primarily draws from psychodynamic/psychoanalytic, existential, and relational models, as well as from attachment theory and interpersonal neurobiology. For those who don’t know or don’t care what that means, I am influenced by the idea that change, healing, and growth occur in therapy when the work is informed by the totality of who you are as a person. This includes thoughts, feelings, emotions, past experiences, identity (i.e. race, sexuality, gender), family and cultural background, and our relationship to our bodies and our environment. I believe the role of the therapist is to be curious about the totality of each person and to hold that in an environment of respect, honesty, creativity, and non judgment.
